A duo of life-sized dinosaurs stands tall in a grove of misplaced palm trees, just off Highway 24 in Woodland Park, Colorado. Of course, the oft-snow covered relics aren’t the real deal, but they certainly call attention to the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center.
The 20,000 square foot Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center features many replicas and fossils of dinosaurs, prehistoric marine reptiles, and fish on display. The Center was founded in 2004 by Mike and J.J. Triebold of Triebold Paleontology Incorporated (TPI). TPI is a company that provides many paleontologic-related services, to include mold-making and casting of dinosaur bones. A unique feature of the Center is the viewing stand to the casting operation, where visitors can watch the making of dinosaur replicas.
Kids may quickly find themselves bored with the mold-making operation, but they’ll be completely engrossed with dinosaurs in the children’s area. The children’s area features several prehistoric-themed activities, including boxes of sand where kids can “dust for bones,” a magnet board where tots can assemble their own dinosaurs, and a box of paleontology-themed puppets. Kids will also like the dinosaur films which play on large-sized television sets in two areas of the center.
The Dinosaur Resource Center provides fee-based birthday parties for children, who can request the Raptor Package or the pricier T-Rex package. Both packages include museum admission for fifteen guests.
Girl scouts and boy scouts can meet the requirements toward various badges at the Dinosaur Resource Center by signing up for a one hour scout program.
The Dinosaur Resource Center hosts many events throughout the year. These events can be found on the Center’s online calendar. The Dinosaur Resource Center gives special admission fee discounts for Mothers Day and Fathers Day.
When the family gets hungry, they won’t find a snack bar in the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. Luckily, there are several eating establishments in the immediate area to choose from.
Visitors to the Dinosaur Resource Center will exit through the gift shop, Prehistoric Paradise, where T-shirts, toys, and stuffed T-rexes line the shelves.
Admission for adults is $9.50, kids under four years of age get in free. Discounts apply for kids ages 5 to 12 and for senior citizens.
