Denver in Colorado is the beer and brewing capital of the USA, with some of the country's best brewpubs: Good news for those at the August 2008 Democratic Convention!

Denver has been called the Napa Valley of Beer, and the Beer Capital of the United States. It has some of the country's best brewpubs, and is host to the annual Great American Beer Festival. The Coor's Brewery in Golden is the world's largest. Why, even Denver's Mayor is a brewer: John Hickenlooper, founder of the Wynkoop Brewery. Hickenlooper was re-elected as Mayor of Denver in May 2007 with 87% of the vote, so he must be doing something right.

When the Democratic Convention is held in Denver from August 25-28, 2008, delegates will no doubt grab a little time off from discussing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to sample some of those brewpubs, bars and beers. There are plenty to choose from, and some of Denver's brewpubs and micro-breweries regularly feature in lists of the USA's and even the world's best brewpubs.

In strictly alphabetical order here are just five of Denver's best drinking places that also brew their own beer:

Breckenridge Blake Street Pub

2220 Blake Street. Phone: (303) 297-3644

The Breckenridge was one of the first brewpubs in Denver, opened back in 1992, and is popular with Colorado Rockies fans as it's right by Coors Field. It's also only two blocks from LoDo and serves a range of Breckenridge's award-winning hand-crafted ales, like their Agave Wheat Beer.

Bull and Bush Pub and Brewery

4700 Cherry Creek Drive S. Phone: (303) 759-0333

An authentic-feeling London pub out in Cherry Creek, with a large selection of its own beers on tap (the IPA is highly rated) and dishes like fish and chips. Sampler beer trays too.

Denver ChopHouse & Brewery

1735 19th Street # 100. Phone: (303) 296-0800

You can't visit Denver and not go to the legendary downtown Denver ChopHouse. It's always really buzzing and the steaks are as good as the seven handcrafted ales that are always on tap, with a couple of seasonal brews too.

Rock Bottom Brewery

1001 16th Street. Phone: (303) 534-7616

With a 350-seater restaurant, beer to go, music some nights, beer brewed onsite (over 100 beer awards) and billiards and parking under the restaurant, the Rock Bottom is another great Denver brewpub.

Wynkoop Brewing Co.

1634 18th St. Phone: (303) 297-2700

Denver's first brewpub (founded 1988) is also the largest brewpub in the USA and one of the largest in the world. What more is there to say? The Wynkoop serves terrific food, like elk medallions, and has tasting trays of their beers including the long-time favorite: Patty's chili beer. Denver's best brewpub? Possibly.
