Denver is hosting the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and the fun facts about Mile-High City include Buffalo Bill, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, beer and Elvis.
The 2008 Democratic National Convention being held in Denver in August will be the greenest ever, with a 100% offsetting of its carbon footprint, despite the expected 35,000 visitors. Mayor John Hickenlooper is planning to plant one million new trees in Denver by the year 2025. At the time of writing he had passed the 65,000 mark. Around TownDenver's 16th Street Mall was designed by I.M. Pei, the architect who was also responsible for the glass pyramid outside the Louvre in Paris. Viewed from above, the 400,000 pieces of granite paving in the 16th Street Mall resemble the skin of a western diamondback rattlesnake. The 13th step on the west side of the Colorado State Capital in Denver is 5,280 feet above sea level – one mile high. If sea levels rise, it may have to become the 14th step. The decoration of the interior of the Colorado State Capitol used up the entire world supply of Colorado Rose Onyx. Denver International Airport is the 4th busiest in the USA, the 10th busiest in the world, is the largest by land area in the United States and is larger than the island of Manhattan. Wining and DiningOne of the founders of Denver's first brewpub, the largest in the USA, was none other than the current mayor, John Hickenlooper. The Wynkoop Brewing Company was founded in 1988. Denver is home to the Great American Beer Festival, but there are also over a dozen wineries within the Denver metropolitan area. Both Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull have dined at Denver's Buckhorn Exchange, a restaurant that's still one of the most popular in the city. Buffalo Bill's grave is just outside Denver. Denver is the nation's thinnest city, with smallest percentage of overweight adults in the United States. Rock 'n RollLed Zeppelin played their first ever American show at the Denver Auditorium Arena on December 26, 1968. Rolling Stone Keith Richards once dropped a television out of a window at Denver's Brown Palace Hotel. Bob Dylan lived for a while at 1736 East 17th Avenue in Denver while he was doing a regular series of gigs at the Satire Lounge at 1920 East Colfax. Judy Collins played here too, and the Smothers Brothers lived in an apartment above the club. Elvis Presley once flew in his private jet, the Lisa Marie, from Memphis to Denver's Stapleton Airport to eat a Fool's Gold Loaf from the Colorado Gold Mine Company Steakhouse in Glendale. The restaurant's owners served it to him on the tarmac at about 2am on the morning of February 2, 1976.
