Denver International Airport is the 5th busiest in the USA. Plans for the first true airport hotel have been announced, alongside other improvements and traffic growth

Despite winter blizzards and airport closures, Denver International Airport still handled a record number of passengers in 2006, all 47,325,016 of them. That was an increase of almost four million over 2005, itself a new record, and makes Denver International the 5th busiest airport in the USA and the 10th busiest in the world. The news comes as a tender is put out to build the first real Denver Airport hotel.

At present, the nearest hotels are several miles away, although this doesn't stop them advertising themselves as Denver Airport hotels. Passengers needing a hotel near Denver Airport are advised to double-check the location of any hotel before booking. If booking online, choose a website that offers a map or location facility. Some hotels, motels and other Denver accommodation claim to be convenient for the airport, which just means that they are on the right side of the city.

This all will change as Denver International Airport is now seeking proposals from suitable organizations to build and manage a 4-star, 4-diamond, 500-room hotel to be directly connected to the Jeppesen Terminal. It will be the first Denver Airport hotel that passengers can walk to. With almost 130,000 passengers (and rising) currently using the airport every day, those 500 rooms won't stay empty for long.

That's why the Denver International Airport authorities are seeking an "internationally recognized brand operated by an established operator of luxury and upscale hotels." One of the conditions is that the hotel be connected to the Jeppesen Terminal by an enclosed pedestrian bridge. Provisional plans have been drawn up for a hotel that has a fine-dining restaurant, another all-day restaurant, a business centre, conference facilities, swimming pool and health club.

The new Denver Airport hotel is just one of many improvements, recent and announced, to the airport. These improvements and extensions are constantly needed, as the airport at present is designed to handle 50 million passengers a year, and if the present growth rate in airport traffic continues, that's a figure which will be reached and exceeded by the end of 2007.

New in Spring 2007 was a $42 million extension to Concourse B to provide 16 new gates capable of handling 50- to 70-seater regional jets. United Express and SkyWest passengers using the new concourse will find there are two Starbucks, a Connections Newsstand, Heidi's Brooklyn Deli (which actually originated in Denver, despite the name) and a cafe-bar called the New Belgium Hub. This is operated by the New Belgium Brewing Company, enabling departing passengers to have a final taste of their Fat Tire Amber Ale, one of the Colorado craft beers which Denver, as the beer capital of America, is famous for.
