Breckenridge, Colorado is renowned as a world class ski resort town and it gets crowded in the wintertime but in the off season crowds are sparse and deals are plentiful

Breckenridge has two “off” seasons, October and May. These two months are what is called the mud months. It’s when either the snow has melted and creates muddy conditions or the snow hasn’t fallen yet and it's raining and muddy. It’s also thea time when the locals kick back, take vacations and enjoy life until they are bombarded with tourists. This town has a year round population of around 1600 but it swells to 35,000 during the winter months.

October is especially a great time to visit. Fall colors are abundant as the aspen trees turn to a bright golden color. The mountains are tipped with snow and when the sun warms up during the afternoons there are several impromptu running creeks and there are many deals to be found in and around town.

Family Friendly Activities Outside of Breckenridge

The ski lifts are closed but there are still many activities to do. Take a short drive ten miles south of Breckenridge to Hoosiers Pass. Stop at the Continental Divide and it's possible that there will be a small amount of snow…just enough for the kids to make snowballs and throw at each other.

Make sure to visit the Country Boy Mine and take the mine tour. Once everyone dons a hard hat, a wonderful tour guide will take visitors 1100 feet into one of the oldest gold mines in Colorado. After the mine tour it's time to pan for gold and yes, people have found real gold. Everyone gets to keep whatever they find. Be sure to go down the slide!

Dining Specials in Downtown Breckenridge

Many restaurants offer two for one dining deals during these mud seasons. There are no crowds, no lines and the weather is wonderful for eating outdoors. One restaurant, the Quandary Grille, offers a $5.00 lunch special for anything on the menu and a $10.00 dinner special.

Shopping Discounts in Breckenridge

Most all of the shops are open (only a few are closed) and several offer discounts of 25-50% off their winter prices. Choices range from handmade jewelry from local artists, t-shirt and jacket shops and art galleries.

Breckenridge is Pet Friendly
